Surviving the suburbs

If you're a Christian interested in heart transformation, this looks like a book worth reading: David Goetz' Death by Suburb. On the other hand, shelling out $23.95 for a book that's supposed to help us overcome the cult of "the good life" is a little ironic, don't you think? In any case, this review at Christianity Today is a good start, and it's free.

Hey, man, prices like that make public libraries look like a pretty sweet deal to me!

Good one Milton. I have often found it funny how much a Christian book espousing the simple life and following Jesus costs. However, authors gotta eat too! I guess.

one imagines that the author doesn't get much of that...

Thanks, Jeff. The book really does sound helpful. But on the other hand, it's one more product along the buy-this-thing-and-simplify-your-life. Some people need to hear that message, but my life is simpler if I don't spend the money.

I got this book from the library, and I'm glad I did - it's a fairly quick read, and it wouldn't have been worth the full retail price, or even half off, used from Amazon. It shouldn't have been a hardcover. That's probably why the price is inflated. There's another one like this, The Suburban Christian, and it looks like it covers some of the same ground, for cheaper (it's paperback), with used copies for just five bucks on Amazon. There's another one coming out later, this fall, Jesus of Suburbia, but I don't know anything about it since there's no info about it yet.
