On reading widely

Unashamed Workman has a long quote from D.A. Carson on reading widely for preaching.

If I could choose, I would prefer to hear what God said, rather than what someone else wrote about what God said.

I love books and have many in the office where I now sit. For me, when it comes time to prepare to speak to others on behalf of God, I try my best to go straight to the source. About half the prep time pouring over the scriptures and half earnestly seeking the will of God in prayer might improve our serve.

Grace and Peace,

By the way, Matt, I've tried to add your blog to the Churches of Christ blog group, but Blogdigger is still having trouble with the New Blogger feeds. Whenever that's fixed, your posts should begin appearing. Peace.

Good point, Royce. I'm the same way. Books are valuable not only for helping us understand the Word, but in helping us understand the world. It sounds like you've read and lived enough to have a pretty good idea of how the world operates.
