Letting them go

Preacher, do you dwell on how your last sermon went, or do you have the faith to let it go? Along similar lines, Steve Matthewson writes on dealing with criticism of our preaching.

I loved those two articles.

On the first, I would say that I learned to "let go and let God" after I had someone comment that they heard me preach last year and still remembered what I said and how it impacted them. This has happened to me on a number of occasions and so I trust God to do the work. I am just a willing vessel to proclaim the word. The word is powerful and has a more far-reaching effect than any of my worrying about how my sermon went. I just trust God and "let it go."

On the second, I have learned that no matter how great the sermon, people will be critical. So, instead of being fearful of criticism, I actually welcome it! Yeah, it may sound strange but since I know there will be critics no matter what is said or done, I may as well welcome it and try to use it to do some good. Criticism can be painful but growth comes through pain, at times, and if we willingly accept criticism, there is no room for bitterness, only growth and forgiveness. Criticism can be our friend or our foe. I believe its a choice we must make. I choose to welcome criticism and trust God to allow it to shape me into what he wants me to be.

Thanks for those articles. It has reminded me of the power of God at work in my own life and how that spills over to others - even if I can't see it. Amen.
