More on verse jacking

John Dunham has more to say on doing away with Bible additives (chapters and verses).

Man, I couldn't agree more. So often we don't actually interact with the Bible text (in context), but chapter and verse numbers have encouraged us to treat each verse as if it stood alone, apart from its context, and can be lifted and applied in countless settings completely foreign to the author's intention. Similarly, we often think of chapters as somehow discrete units, having a start and a finish, instead of organically connected with what comes before and after. No other work of literature do we treat with such disrespect as this work that we supposedly revere above all others. And don't get me going about those publisher-added headings!

Hi Milton - just came across this blog again after checking some old comments on my former weblog www.paulabspoel.blogspot.com

I am now blogging at www.abspoel.blogspot.com and just wanted to say hi again!

I agree that we must read God's Word in the right context. Some editorial things like chapters and verses can be helpful if you want to refer to certain passages, but it must not stop us from reading each book and letter as a whole!

Blessings from the Netherlands
Your brother in Christ
Paul
