Feeding the sheep

I used to try to get people to feed themselves. This is the goal of many discipling ministries such as The Navigators. I think it is a good goal, however, I would agree that the pastors job is to feed the sheep and people should not be mocked for where they are. One of the issues of the feed yourself model is that many people have learning issues. Perhaps they are a genius at math or engineering, but they don't quite get the whole interpretation. Some people have a great ability to argue what the correct literary theme is in a passage, but they don't connect this to something practical. This leap from the theory to practical just does not make a connection in the synapses of the brain. We could accuse them of not being practical, but I think their pastor needs to be helping with this.

I have tried to quite quizzing people and tried to start giving them the answers. I'm not saying I have all the answers but my expectations of people's academic performance is not tantamount to their spirituality.

Good points. Perhaps we should seek a middle ground between either quizzing people or simply giving them the answers. In preaching, I try to lead folks to the truth and let them make the final step to the conclusion. This both actively involves them in learning and helps them make the first step to learning on their own.

Thanks for the comments, Terry.
