On "cultural Christianity"

“If you look at the Western world, which is militaristic and capitalistic, decimating the environment, treating animals terribly, and running roughshod over the rights of the poor—how in the world is this possibly based on the teachings of Christ? . . . It really is the equivalent of, like, a vegan owning a McDonald’s franchise and torturing animals in his basement.”

The thing I like about Moby (besides "Superstar") is that he's doing some things about his observations. It doesn't take much of a leader to point out problems. Quite a different issue altogether to personally live by some convictions that counter the popular mindset (in nyc, no less).

Thanks for the quote, or should I say the transforming sermon?

I think the key that Moby is missing is that Western culture is trying as hard as it can to strive against God. As our society moves farther away from the ideal of putting God at the center of our lives, then the conditions we see today are manifested. There are cultural Christians out there who live the Western cultural lifestyle, but I believe that we know, including those who write and read here at this blog, that there is a difference between those who practice and those who are born into a family that is Christian. At some point in our faith we either stay with the status quo, which Moby sees as cultural Christianity, or we break through to a new life in Christ where we are trully reborn. Our faith is no longer in our words, but in our thoughts and actions. I am very happy to see that Moby does not feel complacent in his faith and that even if he considers himself "clueless", he is trying with his whole self to become what God wants him to be and not what the world has offered him. God Bless to all!!
